I have enjoyed being the mother of five children and also a grandmother of five. It has been a fascinating journey watching each child develop his individual and unique personality.
I was an active La Leche League member for several years during the 1970s; at this time one of the group’s leaders was a member of Dr. Marshall Klaus’s team when he was doing his famous maternal/infant bonding research at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. This group leader was eager to share the team's findings with our group; it was exciting to hear the most current research, which encouraged the beginnings of my deep interest in breastfeeding and natural childbirth.
During my pregnancy with my youngest child in 1979 the hour-long trip to Booth Memorial Hospital in Cleveland where I could birth my child in a maternity center with my husband participating seemed like a small price to pay for a natural birth without unnecessary doctor intervention.
My eldest daughter Christine has also been involved in the miracle of birth; first as an OB nurse, then as a La Leche League leader, a doula, lactation specialist for Charlotte hospitals, and now as a midwife. In 2009 Christine joined three other midwives to create Carolina Maternity Center, a free-standing midwifery center in Fort Mill, South Carolina.
Formally, I have had a long career in various aspects of the medical field. I have performed billing and coding since 2002 for several medical specialties including dentistry and oral surgery. I completed adult course work in medical coding and billing at Maplewood Career Center in 2006. In 2010 I completed a 3-year program from Mtec (Medical Transcription Education Center, Inc.) in medical transcription and will be testing soon to become a registered medical transcriptionist.
While visiting my daughter in Charlotte in the Spring of 2010 and discussing the workings of the midwifery center, I realized that I could combine my years of billing and coding experience with my lifelong interest in midwifery, and shortly thereafter, BlessingChild Midwifery Billing Services was born. I believe that supporting the nurturing women who help mothers birth naturally is the best way for me to show my respect for the process and to encourage the healthiest lifestyle for young families.
